Eye To Eye

RefugArt 2018

A human conection

RefugArt distinguishes itself as a movement that not only helps refugees surpass the many obstacles they are faced with, but also fosters a special connection between children from all around the globe. As our world is thickened with hatred and extremism, people are becoming more and more divided by their beliefs. Often we are incapable of seeing one another as human beings, and instead we adhere to the vicious stereotypes and prejudices that stem from ignorance and a lack of communication. Unfortunately, refugees around the world have fallen victims to this hatred, and have thereby been received with far from welcoming arms. Although many agree that refugees deserve better, the refugee crisis is all too often considered something distant and out of touch. With such little contact with refugees, we almost forget that they are just like each and every one of us, human. We at Refugart believe that the best way to fight ignorance is to teach the youngest generation the power of an open mind. In this spirit, Refugart has created the theme: Eye to Eye. The idea, inspired by our rocks project, is to strengthen that human connection we all share regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity. Throughout the year the RefugArt team will be leading projects done by and for refugees as well as BISA school students, basing all the artwork on the human eye . Our hope is that these projects will not only help raise awareness for refugees, but will also allow children in private schools and refugee camps alike to work together. If the children of today can learn to see eye to eye, they will have the power to re-instill our human connection tomorrow

ROCKS PROJECT

This year's eye to eye theme was inspired by Spanish artist Ana Cid's work in Greek refugee camps. While visiting, Ana started a workshop with kids where they painted eyes on small rocks. Middle school children at The American School have joined this initiative and together we have painted over 1000 rocks. These rocks will be sold in local stores of Barcelona and Esplugues, and all the profits we raise will go to A Drop in the Ocean1 and UNHCR2. To learn more about the work being done by Ana please visit eyetoeye.es

WHERE WILL THEY BE SOLD?

Once this project is fully launched, the rocks will be featured in in displays like these in several shops around Barcelona as well as in Esplugues. These will sell for a minimum of 1 euro, and the proceeds will be collected and donated to the organizations working in the refugee camps where many of these very rocks were painted. Stay tuned for updates on which stores will be featuring our rocks and when you can buy them. If you are interested in giving this project a platform in your own store, please contact us.
