I have been asked to curate an exhibition with Simon Franklin who is a member of Sixes & Sevens.
'Pile' sets out to question the conventions of exhibiting work within a group exhibition. The works interact with each other in some cases becoming ‘piled’ on top of one another. Rather than stand as works in their own right, a sense of autonomy will be lost to the curator’s vision. The collection of individual objects will become one overarching piece, a visual spectacle, where the works act as the material and start to make the definition between the artist and the curator.
The exhibition will feature works from Nottingham based artists, as well as emerging and more established artists from the East Midlands and the UK. Participating artists include, David Bance, Jonathan Baldock, Katriona Beales, Lotti V Closs, Sean Cummins, Sean Edwards, David Ersser, Craig Fisher, Dan Ford, Simon Franklin, Lynn Fulton, S Mark Gubb, Frank Kent, Brendan Lyons, Laura McCafferty, Zoe Mendelson, Jock Mooney, Lauren O'Grady, Audrey Reynolds, Lucienne Simpson, Derek Sprawson, Debra Swann, Lee Triming, Gerard Williams, Annie Whiles and Neil Zakiewicz.
The exhibition opens on the 19th November from 6-9pm at Surface Gallery, Nottingham. The exhibition will then be open from the 20th November - 11th December. For more information please visit the following websites, www.sixesandsevenscollective.co.uk/present www.surfacegallery.org/index.php/whats_on/

I am participating in 'Nothing is Forever' which celebrates the completion of the South London Gallery's £2 million building project, bringing together wall paintings, drawings and text pieces by 20 British and international artists. Seamlessly integrating art and architecture, and with each work destined to be embedded in the fabric of the buildings when painted over at the end of the show, Nothing is Forever marks an important and transitional moment in the South London Gallery’s history. As the institution expands into a formerly derelict house and a new building incorporating the surviving walls of a former lecture theatre and library, the exhibition draws visitors through the SLG’s new and existing spaces with a variety of approaches to making art directly on the walls. For more information please visit the website, www.southlondongallery.org
12th February 2010
I am participating in a group exhibition called 'Thread Bare' at Rochester Art Gallery. Other artists in the show are Lucy Brown, Joanne Haywood and Judith Dwyer.
Thread Bare presents four contemporary artist-makers who use textiles to explore the human condition and gender-related concerns, relationships between past and present, and narratives constructed around personal and cultural identity. Contradictions and ambiguities abound in each artist's work. Craig Fisher's soft, sculptural installations question representations of violence and macho stereotypes whilst Lucy Brown explores the complex issue of female identity, reworking vintage garments into abstracted, figurative forms.
The Craft Case presents a diverse programme of small to medium-scale, high-quality, contemporary applied arts in two bespoke showcases. During Thread Bare the Craft Case will feature Judith Dwyer's unsettling 'Dangerous Dolls and Dogs' created from luxury fabric and recycled objects, and Joanne Haywood's eclectic jewellery, which draws on the conflict of opposites for dramatic effect.
The exhibition runs from the 13th Feb - 25th April. The private view is Friday 12th Feb from 6.30 - 8.30pm. For more information please visit the website, www.whatsonmedway.co.uk/site/whats-on-search/rochester-art-gallery-and-craft-case-thread-bare-p550231

I am participating in a group exhibition called 'Thread Baring: A Portrayal of Masculinity One Stitch at a Time' at Union Art Gallery, The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The exhibition looks at masculinity as represented by male artists working in forms and mediums often considered to be the domain of women. Using materials like thread, yarn and felt in practices like weaving, knitting and embroidery , these visually compelling two and three-dimensional works aim to challenge preconceptions about the subject and forms of men’s art. With a literal construction of masculinity, these fiber artists present contrasts meant to perplex and intrigue.
Artists include : Youn Woo Chaa, Robert Conger, Angelo Filomeno, Craig Fisher, Kent Henricksen, Dave Cole, Mark Newport, Chris Niver, Adam Parker Smith, Paul Villinski, Michael Brennand- Wood, and Rob Wynne.
