From Grit is a solo performance based on
the endurance necessary to overcome a gruesome injury. The piece was created
during recovery from Clark's wrist reconstruction, after she
lost full use of her dominant right hand. Clark confronted the
emotional challenges of rehabilitation with determination, intensity and
resourcefulness. Most of the material was
generated through improvisational scores based on excruciating
exercises from her physical therapy routine. Injury
rehabilitation brought a deeper level of scrutiny to the fundamentals of the
human body in action and a greater awareness of her training
principles underlying both performance and rehabilitation.
