Interview assessment #4

Name: JD Tomblin

Profession: Reator

Company: Tomlin Team

Date of Interview: 6 November 2017

On November 6, I successfully interviewed Mr. JD Tomlin, CEO of The Tomlin Team, through the phone, who wonderfully explain the layout of his real estate team and how split-commission and house commission worked, his values in the career, and what most real estate agents look for in hiring another agent. I gained the financial side of aspects in real estate through this interview which helped explain the backdrops to finance being in most careers. I also learned more about how commission works when buying a home and how competition played out in a city.

To begin with, Mr. Tomlin mentioned the amount of real estate firms in Dallas. He stated that over 42,000 real estate companies were of the North Dallas area which explains the amount of competition there is in this career. If these companies did not gain enough clients, on the buying of selling side, their business could flunk in a matter of months. I connected with this statement because the competition with financial advising companies was the same way. I also agree with the large amount of real estate companies in Dallas because the suburbs of Dallas are growing cities only waiting to be fluctuated with incoming people looking for new homes and dwellings to live in.

In addition to competition, Mr. Tomlin mentioned why his agency was very distinct compared to other firms in the area. His company covers Collin County, Rockwall, Dallas County, Plano, McKinney, Denton, and a few other counties. His demographics of his boundaries in selling homes covered a large amount of Dallas that proves his strength in Real Estate within Dallas. Hearing about his boundaries made me question how agents come across these homes even if they are fifty miles out. Before interviewing with Mr. Tomlin, I also noticed his team and history over the years. He started The Tomin Team in 2010 and his growth over the past years has been amazing. His team was also voted Best Real Estate Team by D Magazine which proved his company’s distinction.

As we reached further into the interview, Mr. Tomlin spoke about his values in somebody. He claimed he wanted somebody who was humble, hungry, and smart. He wants somebody who can put the team before themselves which I found amazing. I strongly agreed with his idea of someone being humble, hungry, and smart because an employer needs a trustworthy person who can proves their actions are dependable for the years coming. However, what he valued the most was ethics and trust which are long-term values that somebody looks for in a person. By this, I could relate to how a person needs to keep their ego in check. This falls into behavioral characteristics that lead to a good future. If somebody doesn’t have these traits, then they could treat their clients or customers badly and leads to a horrible reputation

Lastly, I spoke to Mr. Tomlin about something I read about in an article. I asked him to explain waterfall projections to me which I knew nothing about. He mentioned that these projections were estimates of population flow, home values, etc.… that helped real estate agents make predictions on homes and locations for future investments. He also explain commissions and said that the average commission an agent received was three percent of the homes values
