Throughout its existence, ISEG has always sought to maintain its position at the forefront of Portuguese universities in the fields of economics and management, creating new courses while constantly updating course programmes and teaching methods. The Shanghai Ranking 2016, officially known as the "Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)" which annually presents the top 500 universities worldwide, positions the University of Lisbon in 160th position worldwide, 53rd in the European Union.
