What comes to mind when you hear the word self-care? It's a buzz word for social workers specifically, and is pretty self explanatory. What are some ways you care for you? For me, social media detox, painting my nails, going out to eat, boundaries, getting fresh air, swimming, and sleeping are some ways I take care of myself. In our busy lives, it's easy to forget of push self- care off to, later. Blessedisshe.net gave some good pointers on why this is from God to Treat Yoself! First, He commands us to take care of our bodies. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 it reads “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” Also, we can't give what we don’t have. If we are all stressed out and wore out, how can we take care of our families, be a listening ear to friends, and most important, lead others to God? Finally, Jesus did it! Jesus took care of a lot of people. And he still does today! In the Bible, He teaches to follow his example of caring for yourself, while leading Him to others. In the Book of Mark, Jesus went to be alone to rest or pray by Himself. This shows that it is human to rest, take a break, and be in solitude. Another good example of Jesus treating Himself was when he took time to sleep. In Matthew 8:23-27 gives us the story of Jesus calming the storm. Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. “ Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” Jesus was sleep. I'm sure, in his human form, he was tired. Even when it was inconvenient for others, he took the time out to sleep. It doesn’t give us any information about if He went back to sleep, but, He may have! This teaches us that we can still do amazing things when we are well-rested and treat ourselves to self-care.
