My work is based on snapshots that I take in everyday life.
Here, I collected photos of people holding umbrellas or scenes with umbrellas as one of my projects.
In the process of taking umbrella themed pictures and collecting them, I started feeling that umbrellas have somewhat of significant meaning in Japanese culture.
To me, the damp air and dull lighting is an image of Japan and I consider it a very Japanese thing to use an umbrella even when it is only drizzling.
The point of shooting is to take an objective photo of umbrellas and making it an accent of the usual scene. The umbrella is not the main focus but representative of everyday life with them.
Usually umbrellas are an annoying item but when it rains, we need them for sure. With umbrellas in the scenes, I try to express the originality of the people or uniqueness of the umbrella in the photo.
I hope everybody can imagine the behind the scene story when they look at these photos.
