Vocational School
The vocational school is a one year free program for young adults between the ages of 14 to 22 who are unable to pay $40/year to attend secondary school. Many of the students come from extremely poor families or are orphans. In Arusha there are a large number of youth from such backgrounds. Unfortunately many end up on the street and are eventually drawn to criminal activities. The vocational program not only serves to provide them with skills, but also provides structure and a positive environment to learn positive life skills. Above all, the students, the teachers and the Henmaq Foundation staff become a family and a support system for each other.
Currently, the students can specialize in Catering, Sewing, Tourism, Welding, Masonry, Bricklaying Secretarial Studies and Computer Applications. They all take English as a supplementary . Upon graduation from the Henmaq Foundation program, staff help the students find jobs in their chosen field.
Each year we receive over 200 applications from the youth in our community to attend the Vocational school. Unfortunately limited resources allow for only 10 students per year. The selection process is based on written essays, elementary school grades, interviews, need and desire.
We are not restricted in what we teach our students. We need volunteers who can teach valuable skills that will enable our youth to find jobs. We are in particular need of computer and language teachers. No prior teaching experience is necessary. The class structure and content to be taught are very flexible. Volunteers are encouraged to discuss teaching plan and methodology with local staff upon arrival. Click to Apply as a Volunteer
