Independent Study and Mentorship (ISM) is a rigorous, self-guided course offered only at Frisco ISD high schools for juniors and seniors. The students that are accepted into the rigorous elective are driven, independent, and responsible, and can be trusted to leave campus during the day in order to conduct interviews and visit their mentors. The participants can choose a career topic of their choice and work with professionals in their field of study. Students in ISM develop leadership and speaking skills, learn how to write resumes, dress professionally, write formal emails, and learn the importance of goal setting.
Some topics that students are studying this year include (but are not limited to):
- Public and Government Policy
- Journalism
- Aerospace Engineering
- Pediatric Physical Therapy
- Humanitarian Aid
- Marketing
- Veterinary Science
A student who thrives in ISM has a strong interest in their topic and an unwavering work ethic. Because mentors willingly give their free time and expertise to the student, he or she must be trusted to conduct themselves properly and independently.
