How to troubleshoot power issues in Lenovo Laptops

1. System will not power on-


Troubleshooting power issues presume that there is no power availability. The symptoms are mentioned below that shows the system has worked earlier but now fails to work.

The two symptoms which indicate power issues are-


There will be no indication of any power, the power-on indicator is not on and the power supply fan isn’t running also.
In such situation, the user-


a. Check the power cord and switch on/off connector for the installation.
b. Make sure that 115/230 voltage selector switch on the back side of the system is set to the correct voltage for your vicinity. If you are changing the switch position, ensure to unplug the laptop first.
c. Ensure that power is available. Connect directly to wall sockets. Take out any protectors and power strips.
d. Now, do a power supply reset by unplugging the power cable, and then press the power button in and hold it for 15 seconds. Reattach the power cord and try to power on the laptop.
e. Look for Power supply diagnostic LED indications- Some new power supplies are stocked with LED's to point out power supply and system board detected conditions.
f. Ensure that power switch is mounted to chassis or to the fan/ speaker/ power switch assembly- Switch should be safely attached to the chassis.
g. Check if the machine boots with the cover off, use a pencil to press the power switch.


1. Fit the connector to system board from power supply.
2. Dissociate all drives and remove all memory and adaptor, just leave the processor, system board and the power supply system board connector attached.
3. Reset the Lenovo Laptop’s board and riser adapter card as required.
4. If laptop is professionally services, ensure that all parts are correct for the laptop.


2. Laptop powers off unexpectedly-


The laptop shuts down suddenly by itself. No power indicator is flashing.
a. Make sure that 115/230 voltage selector switch on the back of laptop is set to correct voltage of your vicinity. In case if you are changing the position, make sure to unplug the laptop first.
b. Take out any protectors and power strips.
c. Check all external cable connections for possible broken or loose connections.
d. Do test the laptop for a long period while booted to the system configuration usage.
e. Remove the laptop cover and check the power supply fan and fan processor fan (if installed) working.
f. Disconnect every additional drives (such as hard drives, CD-ROM or DVD drives) that were added.
g. Now, run the latest version of PC diagnostics available for your laptop.
h. Make sure that the updated BIOS code is installed.
i. Set CMOS to default settings.
j. Reset the memory. Save the settings and exit.
