We live in two worlds and consider life as a mirror ... in the mirror we see life "as it is" and behind the mirror exists another world that we cannot see so easily and clearly. We asking ourselves "who am I?" and behind the mirror one wonders "what am I?". That world from "other side", is shaped and it moves on different spatio temporal realities and there dreams, thoughts and memories resides and interlacing. When we seek a frame of meaning for our actions in life, we find it once on one side and on the other side, but most often we find the truth of our lives where there is no more life. With this foreword I try to explain the nature of the paintings of Iris Terdjiman. She is one of the rare contemporary painters who succeed to make visible simultaneously worlds of the both side of the mirror. In her artworks she with mastery and ease paints the both worlds.

T. S. Eliot in one of his essay concluded that one poet without other poets means nothing. Following this I will not try to put paintings of Iris Terdjiman in the context of other movements in visual art as we know them from the past and present. There are many experts who can do more skillful than me. And also any comparison in the art can be disgusting too. Rather I will put unique artworks of Iris Terdjiman in the line of one painter "who painted a requiem for human civilization ... from the escape from the hells of the 20th century ... in the contemplation ... of the completely lost old world ...": a painter who at the end "opts for a flat painting without perspective or volume" (Zoran Music).

Iris Terdjiman as a painter of the 21th century convincingly returns in paintings what seems almost impossible. In the world which we live as a victims of totalitarianism of abstract ideas - she resurrected the human figure. And this human figure taken from the contemporary urban life is surprisingly attached and connected with unexpected spiritual horizons. While the whole western paintings tradition of masters - especially in the churches in the framework of christian tradition - is based on view that God is something outside the human being, Iris Terdjiman opposite to this traditional context paints the human figures as the God is inside of them.

This is the key point that might explain why Iris Terdjiman artworks are so multilayered, special and rich of meaning - she paints the shapes of human soul and her artworks with its monumental sizes are standalone or self standing contemporary "cathedrals" which inviting you to the journey into spiritual landscape - on a journey "behind the mirror". Exists one sketch by Franz Kafka which with the image tells more clear what was said: " Mann vor stehendem Spiegel". That might help you - to see.
