Burnside

The DIY Legend

Burnside is legendary throughout the skateboard industry and even throughout pop culture. The skateparks origins date to 1993, when a group of skaters began pouring concrete at a squabble bank on the eastside of the Burnside bridge. Over the next 25 years, through hard work and donations, the park grew substantially, despite being an unsanctioned park on city property. Through the years the park took a location, which included vagrants and crime, and created something very special, eventually pushing the crime and vagrants out. Today, Burnside operates as a sanctioned skatepark by the City of Portland, and is operated by a Board of Directors with assistance by charitable givers and dedicated volunteers.

The skatepark is not designed for the faint of heart, and should generally be utilized by advanced to professional skaters. Additionally, it is imperative to know and adhere to skatepark etiquette, while specifically respecting the locals. The local skaters of Burnside, have been skating the location for a long time, generally volunteer park build time, and are apprehensive of outsiders at the park. Though this may seem archaic, but feeling are justified in the sub-culture. When visiting Burnside it is imperative to ask permission to skate if you are new, flow skate etiquette, and by all means ask for permission politely (with all camera equipment stored) to take photos. The skaters at Burnside are very proud (rightfully so) and when respected will generally welcome newcomers. Finally, Burnside is arguably the most famous skatepark in the world and with well worth at minimum watching skaters, but it is imperative to do so with respect.

Stats or description of features for Burnside are hard to explain. The park was designed with continual flow, so nothing at the park is built as an individual feature. The best way to see what features Burnside has, is to watch skaters ride or view various videos on the park. Below are a two videos on the changes in there area surrounding the park and the annual Halloween Skate Bash at the Park.
