Mr. Atul Kindre was the Sarpanch of the village Balawadi, near Bhor; and also a building material supplier himself. Our discussions started with a simple question from him asking if we require any cement for 'Nivaant' at Jayatpad. We came to know he had a beautiful courtyard house, also known as a 'Wada' in his village that he was planning to demolish and rebuild. His brief was to house three nuclear families instead of a single joint family, which resided in the house before.
After a few discussions, the Client decided to retain all old mud walls and only construct a few new ones internally. The old roof was leaking and disfigured, which was then taken out and rebuilt using timber frames and clay tiles. The interiors were tiled with terracotta tiles, that help remian cool in summers and warm in winters.
The effort was to retain the courtyard and the essence of the old house, while catering to the new requirement of housing 3 nuclear families. Extensions made to the original house were removed and more space was made available in the front and back yards, to house a dairy that was his secondary occupation.
