As you begin to add apps to your phone a good place to start is with Google Apps There are four (4) Google apps available for most mobile devices for free. They are Google Search, Google Maps, Google Gmail, and YouTube. These Apps are very popular and have been around longer than the Android. They have been optimized for the Android platform but you will find that the Google Apps are available for most other platforms. In the past I used these on a Windows Mobile device and have the Google Apps anchored to my Today Screen.

The next logical question is this: What else can an Android do other than Google Apps? I recently got my hands on a T Mobile G1 and have been downloading some "free" games and apps for this cool Android gadget. There is plenty to choose from but you will find that it takes time and patience to find anything worth keeping.

Your best bet is to start with considering what you want to take Mobile. If you are like most people and are into social networking, then you obviously want to bookmark the mobile sites for Facebook and Twitter. There are also many other categories of 3rd Party apps such as Diet & Fitness, Travel & Entertainment, Work & School, etc.

For example, if you are into dieting or physical fitness you will find some apps available for the Android but the options are more limited than that for the BlackBerry or Windows Mobile platforms. This is primarily because the Android OS platform has not been out long enough for developers to convert their existing products.

There are several quality android apps that you can add to your phone to maximize it's capabilities. Even though the platform has only been around a little over a year, android applications are evolving at a rapid pace as android app developers find new ways to get more out the operating system.
