Weekly Update

Wednesday, January 16th was the annual ISM Research Showcase: a convening of every student in the ISM program district-wide to display all of their primary research, mentorships, and projects from the first semester in ISM. Students from ten FISD high schools showcased their first semester of work and goals for the rest of the year. In its entirety, the afternoon was well-spent and a huge success, full of knowledge and information.

I was in awe of the creativity and professionalism of most of the students there, and I loved being able to look at other schools and the unique elements of their projects. As I have only been exposed to the topics and projects of my peers at FHS, finding the most obscure studies of other students was enjoyable. I saw topics ranging from baking and urban planning to animal law and cosmetology, all of which were accompanied by a student who is passionate and extremely knowledgeable on their choice of study.

Even though standing in the same spot in heels for 2 hours was difficult, the experience I gained was well worth the struggle. I was constantly approached by people inquiring on my topic, many of whom had no prior knowledge on da Vinci surgery. I enjoyed getting to explain the basics of the device as well as my research and Original Work, as well as answering any questions my audience could fathom.

Overall, the Research Showcase was very successful, equipping me with self-assurance as well as an even stronger desire to excel on my ISM endeavors. With a strong mindset and a renewed sense of confidence in my professional abilities, I will continue to strive for excellence and take initiative in my learning on my ISM journey.
