Bowling

There is plenty of bowling for everyone. We always say that if you're not sure, just give it a go and join in. Nobody minds new players joining in competitions and putting themselves forward. We encourage everyone to have a go at whatever you want to do. If the notes below don't answer your question, don't hesitate to get in touch.

BOWLING OPPORTUNITIES

Social Bowling

Social "roll-ups" take place every Monday morning from 10 and Thursday from 10. Format is casual, teams selected randomly by cards or by the organiser and then the game played as agreed by the players and ends when everyone is happy to call it a day. Usually the next step is tea/coffee or whatever drink you like in the clubhouse with biscuits or cake and a chance to sit down and chat.

Internal Competitions

We hold a number of internal competitions and everyone is welcome to enter them. They range from one day competitions between teams or individuals to competitions played throughout the season.

One of the most popular is the Hopkins Triples Cup team competition which will be played over the season on Tuesday afternoons. Everyone who enters is guaranteed at least one match for their side. Usually, there are about six matches in all.

The hotly contested Schneider's Cup is a contest between the ladies and the men, playing in singles and pairs matches.

This will also take place on Tuesday afternoons.

The main trophies (Men's single, Ladies Singles, and Mixed Pairs) are decided on Finals Day.

Matchplay

For those who wish to practice match style bowling we hold a training session on Thursday evenings from 6pm.

Friendly Matches

We play friendly matches as well as in leagues and other competitions. About half of our season matches fall into the friendly category. We still play to win, make no mistake but there is nothing at stake other than pride!

One of our traditional (two leg) matches is "The Bread Pudding Cup" which does have a small trophy and is our equivalent of "The Ashes" played between LG and our old friends, Wing. There have been long running family ties between the two clubs so friendly it may be but not without a bit of rivalry and banter. The tradition is also to eat bread pudding after the match!

Other Competitions

The club is always looking at the potential competitions and leagues available. News of our season will be available at the AGM each year.

The club also enters players for Galas.

County League

Hertfordshire have leagues as all other Bowls England affiiates and we can play in both the Mens and Ladies. Little Gaddesden is in Herts West Division. To progress beyond the initial league stage, a club must win the division overall by defeating winners of other west leagues and then winners of other divisional titles. This leads to a county final and a chance to enter the nationals.

The club also enters individuals, pairs, triples and fours into the "Nationals" which start with local county competition.
