About the CLUB

Foundation

The club originated playing on a piece of green behind the Bridgewater Arms in the village that belonged to the British Legion. After a notice was posted in the post office, the club got started as The British Legion Bowls Club although improvements could not alter the fact that the green was not long enough!

At first, it was just a men's club but then in 1983 permission was granted for a green on the sports field and when the new club opened up in 1986, it became a mixed bowls club.

Loans, events and grants allowed the club to develop the location. In 2010, Croquet was added to the Bowling and a vibrant croquet section developed.

The club membership remains relatively small compared to our competitors but LGBCC still have aspirations to participate more widely and compete on a level.

The Village

The club is in Church Road just off the main village thoroughfare. The club badge is taken from the village arms which can be seen in the church of St Peter and St Paul. The key is for St Paul, the sword for St Peter, the blue and white lines for the Gade and the hart crest for the county.

Views from the green are always good, particularly as the Parish Council ensure that the view of the church remains unimpeded. There are also well known bluebell woods, locally beyond the whole Ashridge Estate with its extensive woodlands and management college.

Across the road in the village hall, one can often find the WI selling cake and other produce and there are many other village events held, just a short stroll from the club on a weekend.

We hire the clubhouse out, mostly out of season for events ranging from training to children's parties.

Come and join us and you'll see.....

The Future

We do need help - we make no secret of it that we would love to have more talent and assistance with our plans and in the administration of the club.

The current committee took over a couple of years ago and set about trying to make changes to save the club from financial straits while at the same time, modernising it and delivering a plan for the future.

We have succeeded in delivering some of our aims, particularly a good coaching principle with BDA qualified coaches to ensure we have consistency in how we teach new players and how we practice our skills. We have entered new competitions and attended events so that the club has become better known around the county and is seen as a participator. We are also happy that we have maintained a wonderfully friendly attitude even though we are now catering both to the social and the more serious bowler.

We want to complete the plan by the end of five years to

- Be financially independent

- Compete in national, county and local competitions

- Develop higher level coaching

- Create a junior and a partially disabled section that compete in local competitions

- Upgrade the facilities further including replacement of all old kit, the green and surrounds and the out buildings.

- Have a number of people in the club running different bowling sessions and sections.

- Have a croquet team participating in league matches
